Common winter illnesses and how to prevent them

Achooo!

Remember when this just solicited an “excuse me” and everyone just ignored it? 2020 has changed that. Now, every dry cough, runny nose, and fever is eyed with caution and fear because of the pandemic.

Through the rest of the year, these scenarios were sparse but we are currently in the middle of winter. This chilly, cuddly season has a dark side to it – it brings with it, an array of illnesses. Since the symptoms mimic those of COVID-19, the panic this year is off the charts. There are also reports that COVID-19 could be more lethal in winter, causing even more fear in the society.

But, as long as you are taking precautions against the virus, we assure you that there’s no reason to worry. We understand that’s easier said than done, which is why we are here to help.

Knowledge is strength and we are going to empower you with some important information about common winter illnesses so that you and your family get through this season with nothing but hot tea and happiness.

Why is winter the season of illnesses?

Whether we want to accept it or not, we tend to loosen up quite a bit during winters. We don’t really take care of ourselves because the weather is very cozy. We want to eat hot and delicious food and sleep in every day. It is also not really the season for physical exercise or hard work either. All these changes in routine lower our immunity, increasing our vulnerability to common illnesses.

Common winter illnesses and how to prevent them

Common cold

This illness has aptly been named because it is indeed extremely common. It is caused by different types of viruses. In the pre-COVID times, we knew exactly how to take care of it without having to go to the doctor but now, alarm signs ring the moment someone sneezes or coughs. As we mentioned above, there’s no need to get scared. Preventing it is easy!

How to prevent the common cold

  • Avoid stepping out without proper precautions
  • Always cover your nose and mouth when you step out
  • Eat homecooked food
  • Drink plenty of healthy fluids

Treatment

In normal circumstances, self-care would be the best remedy but depending on your lifestyle, we recommend that you consult your General Physician to see if it is just the common cold or more. Also, if it does not subside within 3-4 days, you must go to the doctor for further treatment.

Flu

The flu is caused by a virus named Influenza. It is a respiratory ailment that is often mild but can be severe as well. Symptoms include headaches, fever, sore throat, and body pains.

How to prevent the flu

  • Wash your hands regularly
  • Cover your nose and mouth when you step out
  • Maintain distance from someone who has the flu
  • Eat healthy food and exercise regularly

Treatment

If you experience any of the aforementioned symptoms, it is best to consult your doctor.

Tonsil infection

Tonsil infection or irritation of the throat is common in children during winters. It usually happens due to exposure to cold wind and eating extremely cold food. Symptoms of this infection include pain in the throat and difficulty in swallowing food and liquids.

How to prevent tonsil infection

  • Avoid consuming extremely cold food items
  • Cover your ears and face when stepping out especially if it is cold and windy
  • Avoid sleeping with the AC on or fan at full speed
  • Eat Vitamin C enriched foods

Treatment

Gargling with hot water and salt often helps. If the pain is too much or if the problem continues, consult your doctor.

Skin problems

Winter invites multiple skin problems such as itchy skin and psoriasis. These are mostly caused due to dehydrated skin.

How to prevent skin problems

  • Drink plenty of water
  • Keep your skin moisturized – use a good moisturizer
  • Don’t bathe in very hot water
  • Don’t scrub your body dry with a harsh towel after a bath
  • Keep your lips soft and supple by using vitamin E enriched lip balms

Treatment

If any skin condition persists, seek help from your dermatologist.

Respiratory ailments

Since the air is dense in the winter season, individuals with respiratory problems have a very hard time during winters. COPD and asthma patients have it worse because even regular breathing becomes a challenge.

How to prevent respiratory ailments

  • Wear warm clothes and scarves when stepping out
  • Stay indoors as much as possible
  • Keep the air smoke-free and dust-free

Treatment

Consult your doctor immediately.

Winter can just be about snuggles and steaming hot food. Just a few precautions will help you navigate through it. Take care!
