Common childhood injuries and ways to prevent them

Kids are bustling with energy, zooming in and out of the house, and almost always curious to explore new things. While this is fun to watch, there’s a sad side to it too – injury.

Childhood injuries are a side-effect of being active and curious. And, while it is normal to feel apprehensive, it is not recommended to get over-protective. Minor injuries are a part of growing up and they actually end up teaching our kids valuable life lessons. Not allowing them to explore or play because of the fear of injury can cause them to miss out on many experiences.
Having said that, there are many ways to prevent major injuries and limit them to scrapes that a band-aid can take care of. This article focuses on these ways and how you can make use of them.

Common childhood injuries
Let’s start by taking a look at the most common childhood injuries.
Falls: Falling down the stairs, in the bathroom, on the road, and tripping over something constitute the leading cause of childhood injury. Every child falls at one time or the other and it is mostly harmless but if you notice excessive bleeding, nausea & vomiting, loss of consciousness, and/or difficulty breathing, you must take your child to the hospital immediately.
Cuts, scrapes, burns, abrasions: The ever-curious mind of a child stops at nothing. Before you realize it, they will have cut themselves with a knife or touched a very hot object. Of course, we are all careful but sometimes, accidents happen. Depending on the intensity of the injury, you must decide whether a bandage and ointment can take care of it or whether you need to go to the doctor.
Choking and poisoning: Turn your back for one moment and children will put the nearest object in their mouth. From coins to small objects, they stop at nothing. This can lead to choking or poisoning and will need immediate attention.
Road accidents, fingers caught between doors, insect bites, and objects lodged in the nose and ear: These are some of the other common childhood injuries to be aware of.

How to prevent common injuries
While it is impossible to protect kids from all injuries, like we said before, we can take some measures to minimize them. Below are a few tips:
Keep possibly dangerous objects out of your kids’ reach. These include hot objects, sharp objects, small objects that can be swallowed, strings, breakable objects, and small furniture that your child can climb.
Always have a fully-equipped first-aid kit handy so that you cater to an injury immediately. Alongside, add a few safety measures for child fall prevention and child-proof your home. These measures include installing window grills, covering electrical outlets, using corner guards, and child-proofing all doors and drawers.
Only buy child-safe items, especially toys and cutlery. If the toys have small parts, be vigilant when your kids are playing with them. Never buy low-grade toys because paint peeling off and small parts breaking off can cause problems.
Children often slip in the bathroom because the floor is wet. This can cause head injuries. To avoid this, keep the floor dry and use anti-slip mats. If your child is a toddler, never let him/her go to the bathroom or take a bath alone.

These are basic precautions but will make a world of difference. Your children will be able to enjoy their childhood and you will be peaceful knowing that your child is safe.
Let kids be kids – they won’t be so energetic and curious for long. Just make sure you build a safe environment for them and everything will be fine.
